Auto-Immune Diseases a Top 10 Killer in Women
Autoimmune disorders such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and type 1 diabetes are among the leading causes of death among women under age 65, according to a study published in a public health journal in America in 2000. It is safe to assume that our rates are similar in NZ and Australia.
The significance of autoimmune diseases in mortality rates has gone unrecognised since they are not classified in the same way as other conditions such as heart disease or cancer. Many auto-immune disorders are not in the list, prepared by the National Center for Health Statistics, that doctors use when recording cause of death. Researchers examined national mortality data for 1995 from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), looking for mention of 24 different autoimmune disorders, and found that, when grouped together, these disorders accounted for a very large portion of the deaths, putting it among the top 10 causes of death. Another reason that these diseases do not show up as a cause of death is that many doctors do not list chronic health conditions as the direct cause of death when completing death certificates. Previous research has found that about 5% of women have an autoimmune disorder.

November 2, 2008 @ 7:50 amHi Laura,
I have seen many women over the years with auto-immune conditions. First thing you do is to “clean up” your life, eat a better (healthier) diet. You may want to consider a detox, it does not involve a lot of money. Go to your library and read some self help books on detox. Make sure your relationships are not toxic either, and – reduce your stress levels. There is a lot you can do before you consider medications. Eat fish, fresh vegetables and fruits, cut out allergy prone foods such as dairy products and wheat.
Take care,
Eric

December 10, 2008 @ 9:59 pmHi Reece,
Fibromyalgia and CFS are not restricted to women, although I see many more women with fibro than I have men. CFS is common to both men and women. Fibro is often accompanied with fatigue, and so is CFS, although a person can have one or both of these syndromes overlapping. The adrenal glands need plenty of support, but with fibromyalgia I would also highly recommend that you take your basal tenmperature, which in a large degree help you to determine your level of thyroid function, which is often compromised in fibromyalgia. With the NZ Foundation, you wll find different associations on Google. A good website to try out is http://www.lupussupport.org.nz
All the best,
Kindest Regards

June 5, 2009 @ 11:07 amHi Eric
Please help. I have psoriasis on my scalp and small parts of the body. First got it three years ago due to stress. I have had many stressful events in my life so am now learning to avoid people that stress me out. I have suffered with allergies all my life and rhinitis. I was thrown from a horse years ago and injured my back. I had a papaya enzyme injection in my spine to shrink the disc. That was 10 years ago. Now it is stiff and sore again. I had my knees operated on 10 years ago as the knee caps were not tracking right. I had bursitis in my hip and had to have a cortisone injection. I had a lateral release on both knees now they are stiffening up also. Other than that I am healthy but suffer with extreme fatigue. I am now 61 and have been working since I was 15. I have raised three boys, been married twice and had a string of unsuccessful relationships. I do not own a home so I have to work full time and keep myself but now I find that I am pushing my self through the day. I have a long way to travel to work and am tired by the time I get there. I just long for the w/e so I can have a rest and then I have my sons to babysit for and I feel that I am been stretched too thin. Can you please recommend a supplement that will get me back on track and also what foods I should be avoiding for my nasal and mucus problems. AI look forword to hearing from you soon. Thank You LInda
